You type “prop firm no time limit” into Google and you get lists that mix everything up: firms with no deadline, others with no minimum holding time, and sometimes companies that keep a clock well hidden in their rulebook. I have been reading these rulebooks diagonally, then line by line, for ten years. There is a gap between the marketing promise and the real contract, let us walk through it together.

The clock kills more accounts than risk

Look at your own stats: most challenge failures do not happen on huge trades. They happen in the last ten days of the period, when you realise there is still 2% to squeeze out in a week. You force entries, you widen your stop, you take trades you would never have taken without the pressure. The deadline does not test your strategy, it tests your nerves.

The worst part is that this system eliminates serious profiles outright: the swing trader who holds a position for days, the one with a day job who cannot trade during market hours, the patient guy waiting for the right setup. A thirty-day window, for them, is a lottery.

What “no time limit” actually changes

Concretely: no more deadline to hit your profit target. You take the time you need, you trade when your strategy gives you signals. For many traders, it is the difference between chronic failure and a first funded account.

But careful, I can see the over-enthusiastic ones going off track. No time limit does not remove the loss rules. It does not always remove the minimum trading days or the consistency rules either. You have all the time you need to hit the target, but you still answer to daily drawdown, maximum loss and often a regularity requirement. Some people find out after paying that they still have to trade a minimum number of days per month. Read the “rules” section before you pay, not after.

Who really offers it in 2026

The5ers is the historical pioneer of the model: some of its programmes have no deadline to hit the target, under current conditions. It is the firm I mention first when a trader tells me “the clock makes me stupid”. Check our full The5ers review for the programme details.

FundedNext followed with its Stellar 2 model, built without a time limit, and you can choose between a format with or without a deadline depending on your temperament. If you are torn, our FundedNext Stellar 1 vs 2 comparison was made for that.

FTMO, the industry reference, keeps a timed evaluation, extendable for a fee if you run over. Yet some comparison lists put it among the “no time limit” firms. That is a quick read of the rulebook, or a list padded to look good. FTMO remains a safe bet, but not for that specific reason, as we detail in our FTMO review.

Who it is for, who gains nothing from it

If you swing trade, if you have a job on the side, if you prefer to wait for a clean setup instead of forcing a trade, the absence of a deadline gives you your strategy back. It is a huge psychological comfort, and in trading the mental side weighs more than any indicator.

If you are an active day trader and you pass in two weeks without forcing, no time limit brings you almost nothing, for a fee that is sometimes higher. Do the honest test: if you fail by forcing trades at the end of the period, this model is for you. If you fail by blowing your daily loss early in the month, removing the deadline will not change a thing.

The hidden traps behind the promise

  • The limit is removed only on the first phase, the second one stays timed. Check both steps.
  • A hidden minimum trading days rule. No deadline, but you still have to trade at least X days per month. For a swing trader, that is sometimes worse than a deadline.
  • Strict consistency rules that force you to take your foot off the gas when things go well.
  • The funded account also has activity conditions: without regular trades, it can be closed. “No time limit” applies to the evaluation, not to the life of the account.
  • “No minimum holding time” has nothing to do with this topic: it is about how long a position must stay open for scalpers, not about the deadline to hit the target. The two get mixed up all the time, even in articles ranking on page one.

My take, no filter

No time limit is the best change this industry has seen in years, not because it makes the challenge easier, but because it puts the strategy back at the centre of the game. The5ers got it before everyone else, FundedNext industrialised it with Stellar 2. FTMO keeps its timed framework, and for good reasons: it is the most copied and most proven model on the market.

My rule is simple. You force trades under pressure? Look at The5ers long-term programmes. You want a foot in both worlds? FundedNext Stellar 2. You want the industry standard with an accepted deadline? FTMO.

The questions I get asked on repeat

“Without a deadline, can I trade once a month?” No. No deadline does not mean no activity requirement: most programmes demand a minimum regularity or a minimum number of trading days. If you cannot trade regularly, no model will fix that.

“Is it more expensive?” Not necessarily, and the math is about the number of attempts, not the fee. A challenge passed on the first try thanks to patience costs less than three timed failures. Compare the likely total cost, not the display price.

“I am a beginner, is it for me?” Removing the deadline removes pressure, not the groundwork. As a beginner you need to validate your strategy in demo under the firm’s rules first, otherwise you just pay to learn, in slow motion. The clock is not your problem until you have an edge.

Compare the firms in one minute on our prop firm ranking, then go test your strategy in demo. This industry will take your money fast if you pay with hope, it will pay you for a long time if you show up with a method.
