FTMO is the prop firm everyone names first, often the only one people know. But does “the most famous” mean “the best for you”? This FTMO 2026 review answers directly: what the firm does really well, what its 5-star reviews don’t tell you, and which profile it’s worth the challenge fee for, or isn’t. Our verdict in one sentence: FTMO is the industry benchmark for payout reliability and solid rules, but it’s neither the cheapest nor the most lenient.

FTMO at a glance: the established leader since 2015

FTMO is a Czech company founded in 2015 by traders, which partly explains its credibility. It claims more than 3 million clients and has established itself as the “sensible” firm of the market: no extravagant promises, no rules changed mid-way, one of the longest public payout track records in the industry. Its model: a two-step challenge with no time limit, on virtual capital from $10,000 to $200,000, then a funded account where you keep most of the profits.

What FTMO does really well

1. Payment reliability that no longer needs proof. This is the core of FTMO’s reputation: the firm pays, and it pays fast. Since the My Forex Funds collapse and MetaQuotes’ crackdown on prop firms in 2024, FTMO has been one of the players that kept paying out without flinching.

2. No time limit. Where many challenges impose 30 days to pass, FTMO lets you take your time, precious if you can’t trade every day.

3. Fees refunded at the first payout. If you pass, the challenge fees are refunded with your first profit withdrawal. The firm only earns on failures, a green flag we detail in our guide on prop firm scams.

4. A scaling plan up to 90%. The standard split is 80% for the trader, but the scaling programme raises your share up to 90% and your capital as payouts stack, depending on current conditions.

5. Solid execution conditions. MT4, MT5, cTrader and an established broker behind: tight spreads, fast execution.

What the 5-star reviews don’t tell you

Because an honest review also lists the flaws:

The 5% daily drawdown is ruthless. FTMO caps the daily loss at 5% and the total loss at 10%. One single position gone wrong (or violent slippage on a news trade) can knock you out of the challenge. Traders used to risking 5-10% per position get eliminated within a few days. We break down these mechanics in our article on how prop firm challenges work.

The challenge is expensive if you fail. Around a hundred euros for a small account to more than €500 for a $100,000 one: three or four failures add up to a serious budget. FTMO is not the cheapest firm: competitors offer lower entry fees or single-target evaluations.

These are demo accounts. The official website says it itself: the accounts provided are simulated, with virtual funds. The regulatory risk of the prop firm model is not zero: it’s structural to the industry, not specific to FTMO.

Consistency is required. Four minimum trading days per phase, no luck: you have to show regularity over several sessions. “All-in on one trade” traders have no place here.

The typical journey: Challenge, Verification, funded account

PhaseTargetKey ruleDuration
Challenge10% profitMax loss 10%, daily loss 5%No limit (4 days min)
Verification5% profitSame loss rulesNo limit (4 days min)

And if the 10% target puts you off, know that it can’t be negotiated from your client area. We explain why, and above all how to lower the real difficulty without touching the figure, in FTMO: can you reduce the profit target in 2026?.

FTMO vs the competition

Against the other two heavyweights of the market: FundedNext (our FundedNext 2026 review) offers 1-step or 2-step models, often cheaper at entry, also with fees refunded at the first payout, but with a shorter history; The5ers (our The5ers 2026 review) dropped the classic challenge for a staged evaluation designed for low-risk traders.

Our FTMO vs FundedNext vs The5ers comparison goes into detail, and our best prop firms 2026 ranking puts these players in the full picture.

Who FTMO is for, and who it isn’t

FTMO is for you if: you already have a profitable strategy on demo or a small live account, you respect strict stops, and you want an established firm that pays without arguing.

Move on if: you’re a beginner who has never traded in real conditions (you’ll burn your entry fees), you risk more than 2% per trade, or you expect guaranteed income. Start with a small account to learn, or compare the entry-level offers in the full ranking.

Our final verdict

In 2026, FTMO remains the safest value in the industry: rules that are stable and documented before purchase, an impeccable payout track record, no time limit, quality execution. Not the most exciting firm, and that’s exactly why we recommend it to a serious trader.

But the FTMO product won’t make you a profitable trader: if your strategy holds up, it’s a reliable partner to monetise it; otherwise, save your fees and work on your edge first.

Score: 8.8/10, the market benchmark with strict rules that filter out traders who aren’t ready.

FTMO FAQ

Is FTMO a scam? No. It’s one of the oldest and most transparent firms in the industry, with a public payout track record spanning several years. The model carries a structural regulatory risk (demo accounts), but FTMO went through the 2023-2024 crises without a single payment default.

Are challenge fees really refunded? Yes, under current conditions: refunded with the first payout once the funded account is validated. If you fail, they’re lost.

Which challenge size should you start with? The smallest one that matches your real risk. A $10,000 account with 1% risk per trade leaves room for about ten losing trades before the maximum loss.

Can you trade the news and hold positions over the weekend? FTMO offers two modes: Normal and Swing. Swing allows holding longer positions (including over the weekend); Normal is more restrictive. The mode you pick drives the rules. Check before buying.
