Topstep is the veteran. Founded in 2012, the firm was already training futures traders when half the prop firms you see on Instagram didn’t exist. Except that since late 2025, it has moved its rules, changed its plans and pushed everyone onto its in-house platform. A solid firm, but one whose pricing grid has turned into a trap for anyone who skips the fine print. And on Google, most “Topstep reviews” are written by pages selling you the product.

Quick verdict: Topstep in two minutes

What works: fourteen years in business, a huge payout volume, a drawdown calculated at the end of the day (EOD) that’s gentler than trailing, accounts from 50K to 150K and real teaching quality.

What hurts: TopstepX mandatory (no third-party platform), a Trustpilot around 3.5 stars over 14,000+ reviews, activation fees on the Standard plan, a 50% consistency rule and tight payout caps.

Who’s it for? The serious beginner who wants to learn futures with a drawdown that forgives. Not the trader seasoned on NinjaTrader and glued to their tools.

The accounts and the targets, no fluff

Three sizes, one philosophy. You play a 2,000 dollar drawdown on the 50K, 3,000 on the 100K and 4,500 on the 150K, for profit targets of 3,000, 6,000 and 9,000 dollars. Put simply: your target is worth 1.5 times your drawdown. The bigger that multiplier, the thinner your margin for error.

The consistency rule sits at 50%, with a minimum of two trading days. No single day can make up more than half of your target profit. You make 1,500 dollars in one session on a 50K with a 3,000 dollar target? You have to keep trading, otherwise your pass won’t go through. I dug into this mechanism in our prop firm drawdown rules piece.

EOD or trailing: the difference that decides your survival

A trailing drawdown climbs in real time with your peak, including while your position is still open. An EOD one only moves at the close. In practice: you’re up 2,000 dollars mid-session, you close at +500. At Topstep, only the +500 counts to recalculate your floor. On a trailing account, your floor would have climbed with the intraday peak and pulled your exit closer without you banking a cent. For a trader who lets positions breathe, that’s a gift.

All-in or Standard: do the maths, not the feeling

Standard has a lower monthly fee and charges you an activation fee once the evaluation is passed. All-in costs more per month and nothing at activation.

The real question isn’t “which is cheapest”, it’s “how many attempts do I need”. One or two attempts and All-in works out cheaper overall despite the higher monthly fee. Several attempts and Standard gives you air. Nobody will run that calculation for you, and certainly not the page collecting a commission.

Worth knowing: you can add a daily loss limit to your All-in account in exchange for a discount. Since June 2026, that choice also doubles your payout cap. So you pay to add a constraint, except the doubled cap changes the game if you cash out often.

How you actually get your money

Once the Trading Combine is passed, you move to an Express Funded Account (XFA). The Standard path requires five winning days of at least 150 dollars, the Consistency path three days with steady profits, on a 40% consistency basis. The second is faster on paper, but punishes you if a single day carries most of your gains.

And even eligible, you don’t empty your account: the payout is capped at 50% of the balance, with a maximum depending on account size and the path you pick. I broke that mechanism down in how prop firm payouts work.

TopstepX, the walled garden

It’s the real friction point of 2026. Topstep forces its in-house platform. No NinjaTrader, no ATAS, no Rithmic, no Tradovate. For a beginner, TopstepX is clean and built for futures. For a trader with ten years of setups on another platform, it’s a wall. Architecture lesson: when a firm forces its own tool, every bug becomes your problem. Part of the recent reviews says nothing else.

What those 14,000 reviews really say

Topstep shows a Trustpilot score around 3.5 over 14,000+ reviews. Not trivial for a fourteen-year-old firm, and most complaints are about platform bugs and a lack of clarity on payout fees.

I read it as a signal, not a verdict. What worries me is pricing clarity. To spot the real red flags, look at our prop firm scam breakdown.

Topstep against Apex and FundedNext

Against Apex, the gap comes down to the platform and the drawdown. Apex lets you choose your tool, Topstep locks its own, but Topstep’s EOD is more readable for a beginner. My full take is in Apex Trader Funding review 2026. Against FundedNext, we change ground: Forex and futures, several models.

Topstep FAQ

Is Topstep a scam? No. Fourteen years in business and a verifiable payout volume, that’s not a scam. That doesn’t mean the model is generous to everyone.

Does Topstep accept French traders? Futures is accessible from France, but check the restricted countries list with support before you pay. It moves fast.

Can you trade the news? Yes, during NFP, CPI or FOMC, both in evaluation and on the funded phase.

Are scalping and bots allowed? Yes to both, with no minimum hold time. But technical help with your bots is your problem, not theirs.

My verdict

Topstep isn’t the perfect firm they sell you, and it isn’t the scam machine you read about in the comments either. It’s the institution of futures prop: an EOD drawdown that forgives, real teaching, and a cost structure that punishes those who don’t read.

My advice: start with the 50K, pick All-in if you feel you pass fast, and respect the consistency rule from day one. That’s what breaks accounts, not the drawdown. Before you pull out the card, price your budget with what a 100k challenge costs.
